On Vacation
Dan, Conner and I are in Arizona right now, visiting my parents. It's quite nice - high 70's, low 80's, although it's supposed to cool down on Wednesday. Which is okay - it's still nicer than MN and I'm not at work!
The flight down was good - Conner only had a meltdown about wearing the seatbelt - I snuck it on him when he was fascinated by the plane moving down the runway, although on landing, he was exhausted and crabby, so I hid him a bit and luckily the flight attendants didn't notice. All the people around us thought he did great - and considering there were two kids crying throughout the flight and another dad who was walking the aisles with his child, I count us lucky that Conner was content to sit and watch Shrek. He slept on me for about an hour, not enough, but it was okay.
Went swimming once - it was a little windy that day, so kind of chilly. We'll try again tomorrow afternoon.
Yesterday, Dan and I took off after lunch and visited the town of Tubac, between Tucson and Nogales. It was fun to walk around and look at the overpriced stuff - we went back today so Dan could visit a shop run by Native Americans and he was unimpressed with their stuff and the high prices. He's used to living near a reservation and being able to get everything at cost!
We had rented a hotel room at the Esplendor Resort at Rio Rico - if you look it up, it looks very fancy and Hotels.com gives it a 3 out of 5 rating. I would NOT rate it that highly, definitely not worth the $100 we spent for the night there. I had rented a deluxe King room on-line and when we got there, they sent us to a room with 2 double beds. I called the front desk and they told me that guests who place their reservations on-line are NOT guaranteed the room they select, only that they get a room. Excuse me??? So why is it that someone who uses up staff time by making a phone call for a reservation gets preferential treatment over someone like me, who is saving them money by doing the transaction on-line? Obviously, I was NOT happy.
In addition, they had cleaned our room right late (we had to sit in the bar for an hour until it was done) and they must have used a whole bottle of cleaner because it stunk in there. Our eyes were watering and not kidding, my eyes have been red and I've been stuffed up all day. We had to open the sliding glass door & leave it open most of the night , just so we could sleep.
We went to their restaurant for dinner and I can say that was very good. So go to Rio Rico to play golf (Robert Trent Jones course) and eat, but don't get room there.
Today we tried to go to Bisbee using a map that we got from the hotel and ended up hopelessly lost. We had to go through the local Army fort and my dad didn't have an up-to-date registration in the car, so they ran the plates to be sure we weren't terrorists. (I keep telling Dan he looks shifty) I kept expecting them to pull their guns and cuff us - saying, "Sure, it's your parents' care...right...."
But, in the end, they gave us a pass and we made our way through to a road we knew. Not exactly the nice time away we were hoping for, but it was childless for 24 hours. Good thing - Conner would have learned some nice words during drive. :-)
